The top 5 spam subjects to look out for

We are always warned not to open emails if we are unsure who has sent them and many people stick to this. BUT, spammers are aware of this too, so come up with new ways to trick you into opening their messages and clicking on the links.

Security biz Websense has drawn up a list of the five most common spam subject lines. There is a real danger in opening emails or clicking on links. The most commonly seen subject lines fall into the one of the five categories listed below –

Online orders – The subject line will look as though it’s in reference to an order you may have placed. With Christmas coming up, be sure to check the reference number is correct.

Fake fines – Parking fines, speeding fine etc. Check the email is from a legitimate source.

Package delivery lies – The subject line will make it look as though the email is from UPS or Royal Mail.

Tests for working addresses – These often appear under the guise of a patch for World of Warcraft.

Payment and tax cons – Again, make sure the sender is legitimate.

Be careful when opening any email, even if it looks like it could be from a reputable company. Remember – just because the subject box says it’s from Royal Mail, doesn’t mean that it is.

LulzSec reports Rupert Murdoch as dead

Internet hacking group, LulzSec breached the security of Rupert Murdoch’s Sun website and briefly redirected many visitors to a hoax article falsely claiming the tabloid media tycoon had been found dead in his garden.

The breach came as several other Murdoch-owned sites, including The Times,The Sunday Times, newsinternational.co.uk, and rupertmurdoch.co.uk suffered outages that made them inaccessible.

Those trying to reach The Sun website were re-directed to LulzSec’s Twitter feed, where they took responsibility for the hack.

Today Murdoch is scheduled to appear before a parliamentary committee to answer questions over voicemail breach at News International.

What do you think of the hack? Deserved or not?

Ryan Cleary, the alleged hacker behind the attack on Soca’s website, has been freed on bail

Autistic hacker Ryan Cleary, who has been accused of hacking into Soca’s website has been freed on bail, and returns home to his mum on tag.

Cleary denies the charge.

The 19-year old had been inside for seven days after he was arrested last week. He must wear an electronic tag as part of his bail conditions and his Mum promised the court he would not be allowed online.

Cleary was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome while in custody. He will return to court at the end of August. He will answer five charges under the Computer Misuse Act and Criminal Law Acts.
